ARCHERY… Britain's elite archers are being put through their paces at Lilleshall this week by Head Coach Peter Suk, with Alan Wills preparing for the FITA World Cup Grand Final in Dubai later in the month. Wills is one of just four archers who qualified for the men's' recurve tournament in Dubai, surging up the rankings after his bronze medal at the Dover leg of the World Cup series in August. Wills has been stepping up his preparations with help from his colleagues this week. "Everyone has been great, and very supportive," he said. "I'm staying on at Lilleshall for another week on my own, and after a few days back home, we fly out on November 21, three days before the final." More at The Grand National Archery Society
ATHLETICS… Hayley Yelling and Mara Yamauchi came second and third respectively in the Great South Run behind Rose Cheruiyot. The Kenyan crossed the line in 53 minutes 44 seconds, with Yelling just holding her compatriot off in the final 600m. Meanwhile Marlon Devonish and Christine Ohuruogu won the Athlete of the Year Awards at the British Athletics Writers' Association annual awards dinner, with world junior 200m bronze medallist Alex Nelson and World Youth 100m Champion, Asha Philip winning the junior awards. BADMINTON… Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms missed out on their first Super Series title of the year at the weekend after they lost in the final of the Denmark Open. The Olympic silver medallists were defeated 21-17 19-21 21-17 by He Hanbin and Yu Yang of China and will now look to go one better in the French Open - event 10 of the BWF Super Series, which culminates in a Masters Final in December. GOLF… John Petrie has been named as the new Chief Executive of the English Golf Union. Petrie, who until May of this year was the General Secretary of the British Greyhound Racing Board, will succeed Paul Baxter in the New Year. More@ English Golf Union
GYMNASTICS… Britain's Marissa King, Daniel Keatings and Kristian Thomas reached seven out of the 10 overall finals at the DTB International in Stuttgart at the weekend. King just missed out on bronze on the vault and was sixth on the floor, whilst Keatings also missed out on the podium, finishing fourth on the high bar, as well coming sixth on both the Pommels and P. Bars. Thomas came seventh in both the floor and vault finals. All three gymnasts now look forward to the Glasgow Grand Prix next weekend. More@ British Gymnastics
HOCKEY… Scotland's Cheryl Valentine, who claimed her 100th cap over the summer, has announced her retirement from international competition. "I've had eight years at senior level and that comes with a huge level of commitment," she said. "With the next major tournament not for another two years and coming out of the GB training squad, I just felt it was the right time. They say you'll just know when it's the right time to retire and I believe it's that time for me now," she added. More@ Scottish Hockey
MAJOR EVENTS... Five commercial partners have been confirmed for the 36th IAAF World Cross Country Championships 2008 in March – an event being supported via UK Sport's World Class Events Programme. NETBALL… Former England U21 captain, Sara Bayman, has been called up to the England squad for the World Championships, which take place from 10-17 November in Auckland, New Zealand. Bayman, who was a member of the squad which defeated World Champions New Zealand in the summer, replaces Asha Tett. More@ England Netball
SWIMMING… Mark Foster was amongst those to set new world records at the ASA National Masters and Senior Age Group Championships recently. Foster finished the 50m freestyle in the 35-39 years age group in a time of 21.53, and was joined by Andrew Manley and Chris Jones in recording new world marks. Manley touched home in 50.24 in the 30-34 years 100m, whilst Jones finished the 25-29 years 200m in 2:14.44, 20 seconds clear of his nearest rival. More@ British Swimming
TRIATHLON… Julie Dibens was crowned Xterra off-road World Champion at the weekend in Hawaii. The 32-year-old won the race in three hours one minute and 24 seconds, beating Canada's three times Xterra world champion Melanie McQuaid into second place by more than eight minutes. It was the first time Dibens had tackled the course, which consisted of a 1.5km rough sea swim, a 32km mountain bike ride, and finishing with a 12km trail run. More@ British Triathlon
WHEELCHAIR TENNIS… David Phillipson and Lucy Shuker both progressed through to the next round of the Nottingham Indoor Tournament. Phillipson beat Laszlo Farkas of Hungary 6-4 6-2 whilst Shuker saw off Canada's Yuka Chokyu in three sets. Jayant Mistry also progressed in three sets against Yoshinobu Fujimoto of Japan as did Jordanne Whiley, who overcame Israel's Llanit Fridman in straight sets. There was disappointment for Gordon Reid however, as he lost 2-6 4-6 to Joachim Gerard of Belgium. More@ The British Tennis Foundation
