BADMINTON… The campaign to stage the 2011 World Championships – which will be supported via UK Sport's World Class Events Programme - received a major boost this week when London 2012 Chairman, Lord Coe, gave the bid his full backing. The aim is for the 19th World Individual Championships to be staged in London in August 2011 with three Olympic sites - ExCel London, The O2 Arena and the Greenwich Arena - as possible venues. "LOCOG is pleased to support BADMINTON England in their bid to bring the World Championships to London for the first time in 2011, said Coe. "For London to be the world stage for yet another major sporting event in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games would be tremendous news for the country." Elsewhere, Britain's stars will return to Super Series action in the Denmark Open this week. The French Open follows, with places in the rankings for the Masters finals in December up for grabs. BOXING… A squad of 14 amateur boxers are currently representing Britain at the AIBA World Championships in Chicago. The tournament got underway on Tuesday and runs through to 3 November. Boxers will compete in 11 weight categories and must get at least as far as the last eight (last four for heavy 91kg and super-heavy +91kg) in order to qualify for the Beijing Olympics. DISABILITY TABLE TENNIS… Britain won three medals at the IPC European Championships in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. Paralympian and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Cathy Mitton led the British charge, winning individual bronze in the women's class 2 event, before teaming up with Sara Head and Jane Campbell to take the class 2 and 3 team bronze. Meanwhile in the men's team competitions, Paralympians Arnie Chan and James Rawson took silver in the class 3 event after losing in the final to France. More@ The British Paralympic Association
FENCING… Britain's Jamie Kenber finished with a silver medal at the Leon Paul International senior foil at the weekend. Kenber just missed out on top spot, losing out 15/12 to Sebastiaan Combe of the Netherlands. Elsewhere, Rhys Melia came 13th in the junior foil. More@ British Fencing
GYMNASTICS… A record 29 countries will be represented at the Glasgow Grand Prix next month – a FIG World Cup Event. Britain's Beth Tweddle, Louis Smith and Daniel Keatings will be amongst those competing against the world's best at Kelvin Hall from 9-10 November. More@ British Gymnastics
HOCKEY… Britain's men took on the Netherlands this week as part of their training preparation for the Men's Champions Trophy and Olympic Qualifier. Despite finding themselves 2-0 down at half-time to the EuroHockey Nations Champions, Britain rallied in the second half with a goal by Stephen Dick reducing the deficit. However as they searched for an equaliser, Taeke Taekema made it 3-1 in the final minute from a penalty corner. "We were disappointed to lose, but the Netherlands were perhaps the better side on the day," said Coach Jason Lee. SAILING… The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has confirmed that the trials in the three Paralympic classes will be extended to include regatta results from early 2008. The trials in the 2.4mR, SKUD-18 and the Sonar will continue, with events to include the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta and, if required, the Disabled/Open Midwinters at the St Petersburg Yacht Club, Florida, in January and February next year. "Skandia Team GBR's sailors showed good potential during the IFDS World Disabled Sailing Championships earlier this year, but after coming away from the event empty-handed, we wanted to give our leading sailors more time to show the selectors that they're capable of winning medals for Team GB at the Paralympic Games next year," said Chris Atkins, Chairman of the RYA's Paralympic Selection Committee. TAEKWONDO… The Junior European Championships take place this weekend in Baku, Azerbaijan. A 15-strong British squad includes Aaron Cook, who competed at the recent WTF World Qualification Event for the Beijing Olympics in Manchester, as well as German Open gold medallist Bianca Walden and Farren Cummins, who won bronze last time out at this event two years ago. "We have an exciting crop of youngsters here, some of whom are sure to make names for themselves in years to come, and these Championships will be the perfect showcase for their talents," said Gary Hall, Performance Director for Great Britain. TRIATHLON… European Duathlon Champion Catriona Morrison won gold at the 2007 ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championships, with team-mate Michelle Lee coming home behind her to win silver. Morrison virtually led from the start, winning in three hours, 34 minutes and 56 seconds, adding the title to the bronze medal she won earlier in the year at the Long Distance Triathlon Championships. WHEELCHAIR TENNIS… A record total of 109 players from 19 nations will compete at the 13th Nottingham Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament - part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour - at the City of Nottingham Tennis Centre next week. Among the leading British entries for the Men's Main Draw Singles will be Britain's top two junior players, David Phillipson and Gordon Reid, whilst British No 1 Lucy Shuker and 15-year-old Jordanne Whiley are included in the women's event.
