ATHLETICS… Paula Radcliffe will run in the New York Marathon next month – her first for more than two years. The 33-year-old returned to action in the Great North Run at the weekend, coming second behind Kara Goucher of the USA, and will compete in her first marathon since she won at the World Championships in 2005. Meanwhile, Britain's Shelley Woods was victorious in the Great North Run wheelchair race, beating second placed Francesca Porcellato by over seven minutes after finishing in a time of 50 minutes and 36 seconds. CYCLING… Britain's Jonny Bellis won bronze in the U23 road race at the World Road Race Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. The 19-year-old grabbed the podium spot in a sprint finish – an impressive result for the Isle of Man rider. DRAGON BOAT RACING… Britain claimed two silver and four bronze medals in the Premier Division of the World Dragon Boat Racing Championships held last month in Sydney, Australia. The women came second in the 1000m and third in both the 500m and 200m during the four day event, with the men emulating their achievements, winning silver in the 1000m and bronze in the 500m and 200m. EQUESTRIAN… The countdown to the 2008 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games gained momentum last week, with the official launch of Equestrian Team GBR - which allows rigorous and scientific support of the development of athletes and their horse. Equestrian Team GBR is underpinned by the World Class Programme, funded by the National Lottery via UK Sport. "The creation of Equestrian Team GBR demonstrates a collective commitment to maintaining British equestrianism at the heights of recent Olympics and major Championships. We have the opportunity to deliver a consistently high level of performance across all three disciplines and we are always striving to make improvements," said Performance Director, Will Connell. FOOTBALL… Britain's blind team have qualified for the 2008 Paralympic Games, after finishing runners-up at the European Championships in Greece. Having beaten France 2-1 in the last four, Britain faced Spain in the final – their opponents in their opening game which ended in a 3-3 draw. The Spanish proved too strong in the final however, running out 5-0 winners to take the crown. "We are delighted with the way things have gone this week. Our aims were to get into the final and therefore qualify and then win the tournament," said the squad's Performance Manager, Jeff Davis. "We were disappointed with the result in the final, but our main goal was achieved and the squad is delighted and naturally looking forward to next year," he added. More@ The Football Association
HOCKEY… Britain will compete in the 2007 Men's Champions Trophy in Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia, between 29 November and 9 December. The eight team tournament also features Australia, Germany, Korea, Pakistan, Spain, the Netherlands and the host nation. "With the challenges of being Great Britain in the fourth year of an Olympic cycle, this gives our team an excellent opportunity to prepare for the Olympic Qualifier," said Performance Director, David Faulkner. JUDO… Britain won four medals at the Rotterdam Super World Cup at the weekend. Michelle Rogers won gold in the -78kg category, whilst James Millar took silver in the -60kg. Sarah Clark in the -63kg, and Matthew Pursey in the -73kg, both won bronze to complete the haul. More@ British Judo
SAILING… The British Star crew of Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson – who won bronze at the ISAF World Championships earlier this year – are the latest sailors the RYA will nominate to the British Olympic Association to compete at the Beijing Olympics. Percy has been to two previous Games, winning gold in the Finn class in 2000 and then finishing sixth in the Star four years later in Athens, but Beijing would be Simpson's first. SQUASH… James Willstrop and Nick Matthew will contest an all English final at the US Open Championships. Sixth seed Matthew beat the number two seed Ramy Ashour of Egypt in his semi-final, whilst Willstrop saw off Ashour's compatriot, Amr Shabana, in the other last four clash. Both players are seeking their first US Open win in what will be their 13th PSA Tour Clash since 2001, with Willstrop leading the head to head 7-5. More@ England Squash
SWIMMING… Great Britain won a total of 24 medals at the INAS-FID World Championships in Belgium. Despite relinquishing their team title to Australia, the team won 11 gold, eight silver and five bronze medals, with the men's 4x200m freestyle relay team of Craig Moate, Ben Proctor, Dan Pepper and Nicholas Boylan setting a new world record on their way to victory – beating the old record by 18 seconds. VOLLEYBALL… Britain's men are currently gearing up for their first match in the Dutch Pro A league next Saturday (13 October), whilst the women begin full time training at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield this week. WINTER SPORT… Britain's Zoe Gillings has achieved her best result in a World Cup Snowboardcross for three years, after finishing sixth in the FIS World Cup in Chile – the opening event of the 2007/08 season. "I am absolutely thrilled with this result, as it shows that all the hard work and training over the summer is paying off," said the British number one. "This is a great start to the season, and I am very excited about the rest of the winter when I can hopefully achieve a victory in a World Cup – that's my goal for this year," she added.
