UK Sport this week announced plans to establish a new independent National Anti-Doping Panel to hear doping cases on behalf of National Governing Bodies. The new Panel will be established in 2008.

UK Sport and the English Institute of Sport are ready to help GB Rowing test up to 2,500 potential future Olympians over five weekends starting this Saturday in Nottingham. The programme is part of UK Sport's lottery-funded "Sporting Giants" scheme.

Great Britain produced a stellar performance at the 2007 World Para Dressage Championships this weekend in Gloucester, finishing first overall in the team Championship, and winning 13 medals - including six golds - in the process.

 
IN BRIEF

ARCHERY… Britain topped the medal table in the final leg of the Europa Cup juniors series in Ukraine, with 13 archers medalling in total. Tom Barber in the recurve, and Matt Arnold in the compound, both won individual gold before Barber combined with Glen Croft and Eddie Spouge to win the team recurve. Barber and Arnold also claimed the overall titles in their events after the three legs. Elsewhere, elite archers from around the world are coming to Dover to compete in the fourth leg of the Meteksan Archery World Cup which gets underway on Tuesday. The event is supported via UK Sport's World Class Events Programme and is the last chance to secure a place in the World Cup Grand Final, which takes place in Dubai in November. Alan Wills and Naomi Folkard, in the men's and women's recurve respectively, are still in with a chance of a final top-four finish and subsequent qualification for Dubai. ATHLETICS… Great Britain & Northern Ireland won 14 medals at the European Junior Championships in Hengelo, Holland, to add to the success at the World Youth and European U23 Championships and bring the combined medal total from the three events to 39. Alex Nelson and Hayley Jones, in their respective 200m races, the 4x100m women's team and the 4x400m men's team all claimed gold, with six silver and four bronze medals completing the haul. Performance Director, Dave Collins, was delighted with the performances adding that it proved genuine progression was happening across the sport: "The performances over the last two or three weeks show we are going in the right direction," he said. "The big challenge for us now is to ensure as many of these athletes as possible make the transition through to senior international level." More@ UK Athletics   

BOXING… This month has seen England's junior amateur teams return from international tournaments in Belarus and Serbia, having recorded England's best medal return ever. Frankie Gavin (64kg) boxed brilliantly to win gold in Belarus, while Michael Maguire's (54kg) performance in Sombor, Serbia, gained him Boxer of the Tournament, as well as the European Junior crown - England's first gold in this tournament since Erol Christie's triumph in 1978. Tyson Fury (91+) and Khalid Yafai (51kg) were also medalists in Serbia, both picking up silver.

DEAF SPORT… Britain won three medals at the European Deaf Athletics Championships in Bulgaria. Beth Sewell threw 43.33 in the hammer to finish nearly 4m ahead of her rivals to win gold, whilst there was a silver each for Lauren Peffers in the 800m and Colette Doran in the javelin. DISABILITY JUDO… Britain's visually impaired team will compete at next week's World Championships in Brazil. The team of Darren Harris, Ben Quilter, Ian Rose and brothers Joe and Samuel Ingram, will be in action in what is one of the qualification events for the Beijing Paralympic Games. "Our preparation for the World Championships has been as good as it gets, so we're looking forward to it – it's up to them now," said GB coach, Steve Gawthorpe. DISABILITY SHOOTING… Britain's James Bevis shot a lifetime best in the R5 mixed 10m air rifle event with a perfect 600 score to lead the field into the finals at the Open and European Championships in Suhl, Germany, eventually winning bronze in a shoot-off. The Championships continue through to Sunday. More@ Shoot Online 

GLIDING… British pilots won two individual gold medals and the team trophy at the Women's World Championships at Romorantin in France. Sarah Kelman won the Standard Class and Gill Spreckley claimed gold in the Club Class, a repeat of their victories in 2001. Elsewhere Kay Draper was fourth in the Standard Class, Rose Johnson and Liz Sparrow were fourth and fifth respectively in the Club Class, and Lucy Withall came eighth in the 15m Class. MAJOR EVENTS… UK Sport hosts the Cities and Regions Group today to discuss the results and methodology behind 'Measuring Success 3', an economic impact study of six major events, commissioned by UK Sport and which were supported via the National Lottery backed World Class Events Programme. The group comprises of the key stakeholders involved in the bidding for, and staging of, World Class sports events in the UK (outside of the National Governing Bodies of Sport) and will have the first opportunity to view the report's key findings. ROWING… Today sees the FISU Under-23 World Rowing Championships get underway at Strathclyde Park, Motherwell. The event – which is supported via UK Sport's World Class Events Programme – has up to 750 athletes from 52 nations expected to compete, and also welcomes the nations of Nigeria and Sudan for the first time -  described by FISU's Development Director, Thor Nilsen, as a "significant advance for African rowing". SAILING… Britain's young sailors were in the medals at the Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships, winning one gold, one silver and a bronze medal to help Britain finish joint top of the medals table, along with Denmark. Brothers Richard and Andrew Glover finished top in the Hobie 16 Catamaran class, whilst Sophie Weguelin and Sophie Ainsworth won Britain's silver in the girl's 29er class, and James Ellis and Rob Partridge came third in the boy's equivalent. "I'm delighted with the team's performance," said RYA Youth Racing Manager, Simon Wergan.  "We were aiming to get stronger as a team as the event progressed and we certainly did that." Meanwhile, the Cadet World Championships start this Saturday in Wales – an event supported via UK Sport's World Class Events Programme. More@ Skandia Team GBR

SWIMMING… Britain's swimmers have so far won seven medals at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Serbia. Aimee Willmott has picked up three, including gold in the 200m individual medley, whilst Roberto Pavani has also claimed a top spot in the men's equivalent. The swimming concludes tomorrow. TABLE TENNIS… England's young players claimed two golds, one silver and a bronze medal at the 50th European Youth Championships in Bratislava – the biggest haul England have won at this event. England won the team event after a 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic in the final, before Paul Drinkhall combined with Romania's Eliz Samara to defeat team-mate Darius Knight and Natalie Bak of Poland in the mixed doubles final. England's other medal came when Gavin Evans claimed bronze in the Cadet mixed doubles with Hunor Szocs of Romania. More@ The English Table Tennis Association

TRIATHLON… Tim Don won the men's Corus Elite Series in Hyde Park – the proposed venue for the 2012 Games – at the weekend. In a new super sprint race format, which included heats and a final over a 300m swim, 7km bike ride and a 2.5km run course, Don finished top ahead of Germany's Christian Weimar in second and compatriot Alistair Brownlee in third. In the women's race, Erin Densham of Australia won the event, but England's Hollie Anvil and Andrea Whitcombe came home second and third respectively. More@ British Triathlon

VOLLEYBALL… Britain's Men faired well in their first match against Egypt on Tuesday, recording a convincing 3-1 win over their hosts. Britain had to recover from going a game down before going on to win 19-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-23. The squad is in Egypt before travelling to Tunisia and will play three more games whilst they are there. More@ Volleyball England

WHEELCHAIR TENNIS… Britain's Lucy Shuker beat Mie Yaosa of Japan for the first time in her career, to reach the quarter-finals of the British Championships yesterday. Shuker will face world number one, Esther Vergeer, in the last eight following her 7-5 6-3 victory. Elsewhere, David Phillipson and Alex Jewitt both bowed out of the men's main singles draw. Great Britain's basketball squad will begin its preparations for this summer's European qualifying campaign in earnest this week, secure in the knowledge that the team will be at full strength after FIBA lifted its threat to ban English players from competing.

Britain's rowers made history in Lucerne, Switzerland, at the weekend, as they secured their first ever overall World Cup trophy - ahead of Germany on points. The lightweight men's four also produced a first World Cup gold of all time for Britain.

Water polo in the UK took another step forward in Manchester this week with the British men's team making the quarter-finals at the LEN 2007 European Nations Trophy, an event supported via UK Sport's World Class Events Programme. 

 
IN BRIEF

CANOEING… David Florence won bronze in the C1 at the Augsberg World Cup at the weekend – the last in the series. The 24-year-old added another podium finish to the bronze he picked up in the first World Cup in Prague, to finish in second place overall in the series – a personal best. In total Britain achieved seven top ten overall positions. More@ GB Canoeing 

DISABILITY CYCLING… Britain has named its largest ever squad for next month's Para-Cycling World Championships, where results will go towards qualification for next year's Paralympic Games. The team is comprised of both experienced cyclists and newcomers, with Jody Cundy, Darren Kenny and Sarah Bailey all included, as well as Melanie Easter - a former swimmer who won gold in Sydney - who will compete on both the track and in the road events. GYMNASTICS… Claire Wright won a record breaking seventh crown at the British Trampoline Championships at the weekend. Wright saw off competition from Jaime Moore and Kat Driscoll to win the title, whilst James Higgins took the men's title ahead of Gary Smith and Gary Short respectively. More@ British Gymnastics

SAILING… The Royal Yachting Association's Olympic Selection Committee this week announced which sailors will represent Skandia Team GBR at the Olympic Test Event in Qingdao, China, next month. Ben Ainslie will compete in the Finn, whilst newly crowned World Champions, Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson, have been chosen in the Yngling Class. "Skandia Team GBR, from established Olympians to our younger champions, put in a great performance at the ISAF World Championships in Cascais," said Chairman of the Olympic Selection Committee, Chris Atkins. "We've a strong squad of dedicated sailors and are looking forward to the challenge of repeating this success in Qingdao."  More@ Skandia Team GBR

SHOOTING… Britain won four medals – two silver and two bronze – at the European Championships in Granada. Sharon Lee claimed silver in the women's 50m prone rifle event and Abbey Burton won the same in the junior women's trap. The two bronze medals went to Steve Scott in the senior men's double trap, and Luke Garner in the junior equivalent, whilst Jon Hammond gained a rifle quota place for Britain at the Beijing Games after a fourth place in the men's 50m prone rifle. Elsewhere, Steve Pengelly won an individual bronze in standard pistol at the Europa Cup in Switzerland, before joining Alan Green and Hugh Stewart in coming third in the team event. TAEKWONDO… Sophie Dickson won bronze in the +59kg category for Britain at the European Cadet Championships. The three day competition attracted 38 countries, with participating athletes aged between 11 and 14. "I am very proud of the whole team and the way in which they represented their country, in most cases for the first time," said Joanna Wray, Programme Manager for the BTCB Sport Taekwondo UK Ltd. "There is certainly a great deal of promise within this squad and I think that in years to come we could see some of these youngsters doing very well indeed. With the knowledge that London will be hosting the Olympic Games in 2012 it gives young athletes the added incentive to work hard" More@ Sport Taekwondo UK

TRIATHLON… Britain's Leanda Cave won the World Long Distance title in Lorient, France at the weekend. Cave was second in the 3000m swim before heading into the final discipline, the 20km run, with a commanding lead. Despite the best efforts of Erika Csomor of Hungary, Cave held on to win by two minutes. Britain's Catriona Morrison claimed the bronze medal after riding her way from 13th to second place on the 80km cycle. Despite holding second for most of the run, she was overtaken by Csomor in the final mile. More@ British Triathlon

VOLLEYBALL… Britain's women are playing a series of matches in Denmark this week, with their first match against their hosts going all the way to five sets. Denmark ultimately clinched the match 3-2, winning 25-27, 26-28, 25-20, 25-22, 11-15. Meanwhile, their male counterparts are set to fly out for a week long series in Egypt, whilst Beach Volleyball players Lucy Boulton and Denise Johns fly out next week for the SWATCH FIVB World Championship in Gstaad, Switzerland. WHEELCHAIR TENNIS… David Phillipson and Gordon Reid are the first British juniors to make the men's Main Draw singles of the British Open Championships. More than 140 players from 22 nations will take part in the event next week - one of four grand slam equivalent tournaments on the NEC Tour. In the Quad singles, British and World number one, Peter Norfolk, has been forced to withdraw with a shoulder injury. More@ The British Tennis Foundation
