Last night's fantastic success on the track at the World Athletics Championships not only highlighted great potential for the future, but also put anti-doping issues firmly back into the spotlight.

Britain's cyclists have won a total of 13 gold medals at the Para-Cycling World Championships in France to finish top of the medal table. Britain added a further four gold and two bronze medals in the road cycling competitions to add to the haul of nine golds, one silver and one bronze they had won on the track.

Premier League cash boost for IDSPREMIER LEAGUE CASH BOOST FOR IDS
International Development through Sport (IDS), UK Sport's charitable arm, has received a boost to its funds of £2,000 from the Premier League, as part of the League's flagship community programme 'Creating Chances'. By 2012, IDS aims to touch the lives of over 1,000,000 disadvantaged children and through sport.

England's women clinched the bronze medal and a berth at the 2008 Olympic Games with victory over Spain on Saturday during the final weekend of what was an outstanding EuroHockey Nations Championships both for England Hockey, and the UK as a major sporting events destination.

Great Britain's men and women can both still qualify for the 2008 Paralympic Games after further victories at the 2007 European Championships. The men must finish in the top four of the event, and the women the top three, to secure their places in Beijing next year.

ARCHERY… Simon Terry reached the last eight of the Olympic test event in Beijing, and in doing so was Britain's highest finisher. Terry eventually finished eighth overall, whilst Naomi Folkard finished 12th and Charlotte Burgess 21st in the women's event. CYCLING… Britain's David Millar finished second overall at the Eneco Tour in the Netherlands behind Jose Ivan Gutierrez. The Spaniard finished 11 seconds ahead of Millar with Sweden's Gustav Erik Larsson third and overnight leader Thomas Dekker dropping down to end up fifth overall. Elsewhere, Shanaze Reade won gold at the BMX Supercross World Cup in Beijing – which also doubled up as an Olympic test event. More@ British Cycling

DIVING… The FINA Diving World Series commences on Saturday with a young British contingent up against some of the world's top ranked divers. Sheffield's Ponds Forge International Sports Centre hosts the prestigious event as the sport gathers momentum towards next year's Beijing Olympics. The event is part funded by UK Sport's National Lottery backed World Class Events Programme, and will attract a world class field of athletes that includes two Olympic Champions, four additional Olympic medallists, 12 World Champions and 24 World Championship medallists. British Swimming Events Manager Charlotte O'Neill believes that hosting the event will have a wide range of benefits across numerous areas of the organization, "The FINA Diving World Series is an integral part of British Swimming's World Class Events Strategy and in addition to the obvious home soil advantage for our divers, there are also a number of wider legacy benefits from hosting the event," she said. EVENTING… Britain's Jump Young Rider Team of Charlotte Agnew, Dani Cuomo, Emily Galbraith and Georgie Spence retained their European title in Scotland at the weekend. They finished on 167.8 points, ahead of Switzerland in second place and Germany in third. Elsewhere, Nicola Wilson claimed individual silver, whilst Galbraith won bronze. INTERNATIONAL… Ann Grant, Vice Chairman, of Standard Chartered Capital Markets Limited, and the former British High Commissioner to South Africa will be joining a panel session on 'Winning together: business and sport for development in partnership' which will focus on the role of the corporate sector in sport for development, as part of the Next Step conference this September in Windhoek, Namibia. The conference, led by UK Sport's International Development Programme, will bring together members of the international sport and development community to focus on issues of youth development and empowerment through sport. Former leading athletes Edwin Moses, Frankie Fredericks and Dame Kelly Holmes, will all be in attendance to speak on the use of sport as a tool for social change and inspiration for young people.  More @ Next Step 2007

JUDO… British Judo has announced 23 of its team for the 2007 Fighting Films GB World Cup for Men on the 22nd & 23rd September – an event being supported via UK Sport's World Class Events Programme. The British team includes World Champion Craig Fallon, as well as fellow previous World Cup gold medallists, Peter Cousins and Euan Burton. They are joined by fellow World Championships squad members James Millar, Jean-Rene Badrick, Matthew Purssey and Winston Gordon. "To have an Olympic qualification event on home soil is of advantage to the British team and our Beijing Olympic hopefuls have the ability to win both medals and achieve vital qualification points. It is also an opportunity for our Development players to compete.  I am sure they will rise to the occasion and produce some fantastic performances," said Performance Director, Colin McIver. NETBALL… Jess Garland, who was named on UK Sport's Elite Coach programme last year, has been appointed assistant coach of TeamBath. Jan Crabtree will continue as head coach with Garland, who used to be a TeamBath player and who is rated as one of the country's most talented young netball coaches, leaving Celtic Dragons to take up her post alongside her. Garland has already coached England teams at under-17 and under-19 levels and is a member of England's under-21 coaching team. "I really enjoyed my time with Celtic Dragons last season. It was my first year of full-time coaching and a really good experience for me, but I'll be facing a different challenge here," said Garland. More@ TeamBath

ORIENTEERING… The 24th World Championships finished on Sunday with three British men finishing in top 20 of the sprint distance. Graham Gristwood came 12th, Jon Duncan 16th and Jamie Stevenson 18th. World Champion Jamie Stevenson's 9th place in the long distance was the highlight as it was the second best performance by a British male runner in this discipline (bettered only by his own 8th in Sweden 2004). There were many other great performances including four World Championships personal bests. More@ British Orienteering

ROWING… Great Britain secured five more Olympic qualifying spots by reaching World Championships finals in Munich. The men's coxless four, pair and double, plus the women's double and sculler Alan Campbell all went through to their respective medal races. The four won a tight race with France and Italy whilst Campbell defeated Olympic champion Olaf Tufte to progress to Saturday's final. Men's pair Colin Smith and Matt Langridge finished behind New Zealand in their semi-final, and double-scullers Matt Wells and Stephen Rowbotham came in behind Slovenia. Their female counterparts Anna Bebington and Elise Laverick won their semi-final in going through, whilst the men's and women's eights and the men's lightweight quadruple scull also made it through to finals. SWIMMING… Liam Tancock won 200m Individual Medley gold in a new British Record of 1:59.19, and also claimed the Most Valuable Performance award at the Japan International Open to round off an excellent four days for the British team. "I'm really pleased with the athletes' performances and the effort they have put in," he said. "This meet has been a great learning experience and an opportunity for the younger athletes to see Osaka and follow that up with a good meet," said Performance Director, Bill Sweetenham. UNIVERSITY SPORT… Great Britain finished with a total of ten medals at the 2007 World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand. Golfer Charles Ford of Tennessee University completed the haul of one gold, four silver and five bronze, when he finished second in the individual competition. Team GBR recorded more personal bests than ever before, and the podium places were won across five sports – the first time for at least five Games. The standard at the event was universally recognised as little short of outstanding and Chef de Mission, Iain Moir, was very pleased with the overall performance of the British squad given the competition they faced. "The British team can be proud of their performances," he said. "We brought a relatively young and inexperienced team to Bangkok, and we have had many excellent personal performances which haven't resulted in a medal because of the incredibly high standard of the event." Sailing success in QingdaoSUPERB BRITS PASS SAILING TEST
British sailors will have fond memories of the Qingdao sailing venue when they return there next year after claiming a stunning five gold medals in the 2007 Olympic Test Event. Ben Ainslie (Finn), Bryony Shaw (RS:X) and Paul Goodison (Laser) were among the winners.

MANCHESTER TOURNAMENT EMPTIES OFFICES
England is currently staging its biggest Hockey tournament for over 20 years with the EuroHockey Nations Championship underway in Manchester - a tournament that is just as important for the players both on and off the field.

GB SHOW JUMPING TEAM QUALIFIES FOR 2008 OLYMPICS
In a tightly contested European Championships in Germany, Great Britain held their nerve on Saturday to claim the bronze medal and, critically, qualification for the Show Jumping team event at next year's Olympics.

WORLD CUP FIELD CONFIRMED
British Judo has confirmed that thirty countries will compete in the 2007 Fighting Films GB World Cup for Men, which is supported by UK Sport's World Class Events Programme, and promises to deliver the best Judo exponents to the UK in little over a month's time.

ATHLETICS… Sebastian Coe has been elected a vice-president of the International Association of Athletics Federations this week. The Chairman of the London 2012 organising committee, was elected at a meeting of the IAAF Congress in Osaka. Sergey Bubka of Ukraine, American Robert Hersh and Dahlan Al-Hamad from Qatar will also serve four-year terms as vice-presidents. More @ www.ukathletics.net

BASKETBALL… Basketball continues its positive run as Great Britain began their European qualifying campaign with a 77-52 win over Slovakia in Birmingham. NBA star Luol Deng scored 21 points on his return to international basketball. Great Britain now have a week of training, some of it in Belgium, ahead of their second qualifying game, against Group B leaders Holland in Almere. More @ www.basketballgb.com

BEACH VOLLEYBALL… Blackpool is set to host the first-ever floodlit international beach volleyball tournament to be held in the UK this September. Leading players from the UK, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Finland, Greece and Spain will contest the Blackpool International Beach Volleyball 2007, hot off the FIVB World Tour and World Championships, where the first Olympic qualifying places for Beijing will have been achieved. CANOEING… This weekend saw slalom paddlers preparing for the Olympics in a test event held at the newly opened Beijing Olympic venue. Eight of the potential GB athletes competed against an international field, and left satisfied after finishing the event with four top ten overall positions, as well as having more knowledge on the course and conditions they are likely to encounter in 2008. CYCLING… Nicole Cooke set a new record by winning her eighth national title in nine years after victory at the British Road Race championships in Essex. Sunday's win has also boosted her chances of claiming the season-long World Cup for a third time with two rounds to go, "It took a lot of hard work, and it's satisfying to take the win," she said. Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Cooke's run of eight wins started back in 1999, and victory at the World Championships in September would cap off a stellar year. More @ www.britishcycling.org.uk

DISABILITY CYCLING… Britain are second in the medal table after three days of competition at the Para-Cycling World Championships in France, having won five gold, one silver and one bronze medal. Paralympic champion Darren Kenny has led the way so far winning gold in both the CP3 3000m pursuit and the CP3 1km time trial, in which he also set a new world record of 1:13.011. Britain's Rik Waddon also put in a superb performance in the time trial to take the silver. There was also a top performance from Jody Cundy, who blew away the opposition in the LC2 kilo with a world record ride of 1:08.719. In the B and VI classifications there were gold-medal winning performances from both Britain's men and women, with duo Anthony Kappes and Barney Storey taking gold in the 1km time trial before Paralympic champions Aileen Mcglynn and Ellen Hunter repeated the success to take also take gold. Britain's Sarah Bailey also picked up a medal, despite suffering from a broken collarbone, taking home bronze in the LC1 500m time trial. More @ www.paralympics.org.uk

GLIDING… Pete Harvey has successfully defended his Open Class title at the European Gliding Championships which finished on Saturday at Issoudun in central France.  Harvey had been engaged in a ding dong battle with German pilot Uli Schwenk over the course of the two week long competition but a third place in the final race was sufficient to give Harvey the title for the second time in a row and a third consecutive medal in the competition.  World Champion Leigh Wells took the bronze medal in the 15m class. GYMNASTICS… British Gymnastics have announced the Women's and Men's squads to take part in the 40th World Championships in Artistic Gymnastics in Stuttgart, Germany, this September. Out of the 24 Men's and 24 Women's Teams who passed successfully through last year's first round of the Qualifications, only the top 12 will receive visas for Beijing. HOCKEY… England's men failed to make the semi-finals at the EuroHockey Nations Championship in Manchester after losing 3-0 to Germany. The result also puts the team's Beijing aspirations on hold until early 2008 where England will have a further chance at Olympic qualification in either in New Zealand, Chile or Japan. LONDON 2012… Organisers of the 2012 London Olympics are to allow more businesses the chance to back the games financially, by expanding sponsorship categories over eight sectors. Organising committee LOCOG now has eight top sponsor categories, after creating one for clothing and homeware. Existing categories are sportswear, airline, automotive, banking, telecoms, utilities, and oil and gas. It is hoped sponsorship will raise £2bn towards staging the 2012 games, with EDF and Lloyds TSB already confirming their support. More @ www.london2012.org

MAJOR EVENTS… Philip Riddle, Chief Executive of VisitScotland this week announced the appointment of Paul Bush OBE as Chief Operating Officer at EventScotland, the national events agency. Paul's experience comes from an extensive career in sport, where he worked as a coach, development officer, team manager, chief executive and previously as Deputy at EventScotland. Philip Riddle said: "Paul brings a wealth of experience to this important post. Events are crucial to Scotland's tourism industry, attracting visitors from home and abroad and making a significant contribution to our national economy. Scotland has gained a justified reputation as a fantastic location for events large and small, and EventScotland under Paul's leadership is set to develop this even further." MODERN PENTATHLON… Great Britain struck gold in the women's team relay event at Modern Pentathlon World Championships in Berlin on Monday. The team of Katy Livingston, Mhairi Spence and Lindsey Weedon held off a strong finish by the Polish team to take the victory. Mhairi Spence ran the first leg, passing to Katy Livingston, with Lindsey Weedon holding off Poland's 2006 individual World Champion Marta Dziadura.  More @ www.pentathlon.org

ORIENTEERING… The World Orienteering Championships continue this week in Kiev, Ukraine, with Rachael Elder and Jenny Johnson producing the highest placing in the British team in equal 23rd in the middle distance final. In the Long final World Champion, Jamie Stevenson, is looking to collect his fourth World Championships medal and improve on his 8th place from 2004. More @ www.britishorienteering.org.uk

SWIMMING… Caitlin McClatchey won a bronze medal in the 400m freestyle at the Japan International, and in the process came very close to breaking her own British record at the event in Chiba. TABLE TENNIS… Great Britain number one Paul Drinkhall added to his growing reputation as one of the best young table tennis players in the world when he took the gold medal at the ITTF World Junior Series in El Salvador. Drinkhall and Darius Knight then went on to beat the Chinese Taipei left handers Chen and Yeh Chin-Wei to become doubles champions. More @ www.englishtabletennis.org.uk

TRIATHLON… The Corus British Triathlon Team, which will compete at the 2007 BG Triathlon World Championships in Hamburg, Germany from 31 August to 2 September, was announced this week. Great Britain will have at least 16 representatives racing at the event across a range of levels including Senior, U23 and Junior. Tim Don will start as one of the favourites in Hamburg as he looks to defend his World title from Lausanne. The senior women's race will see an exciting head to head between reigning champion, Emma Snowsill from Australia, and Portugal's Vanessa Fernandes. WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL… Great Britain's men's and women's wheelchair basketball teams will be playing for Paralympic qualification at next week's European Championships in Germany. The men were second at the last European Championships in 2005 but could only finish fifth in last year's World Championships. Eleven of the squad heading to Germany featured at the Visa Paralympic World Cup in Manchester in May. Meanwhile the women, who finished fourth in 2005, will take on Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain and Turkey in the round-robin preliminaries. More @ www.paralympics.org.uk
