ARCHERY… Amy Oliver won gold in the women's recurve as British archers claimed five medals at the European Field Championships in Bjelovar, Croatia. Oliver snatched victory with her last arrow as she beat Jessica Tomasi of Italy in the final. Oliver also won the women's team silver after she, Tracey Anderson and Jane Rees lost to Slovenia in the final. Mary Ann Richardson won silver in the barebow and juniors Mark Nesbitt and Chris Wells also collected medals. Nesbitt took silver with Wells earning bronze in the junior recurve. ATHLETICS… Britain's David Weir has pulled out of the 1500m wheelchair event at the World Athletics Championships after being diagnosed with glandular fever. BADMINTON… Great Britain's Anthony Clark and Robert Blair, the silver medallists in Madrid last year, were early casualties on day three of the Proton-BWF World Championships in Kuala Lumpur. The national champions were defeated by Poland's Robert Mateusiak and Michal Logosz in the second round 21-16 21-16. BASKETBALL… The British men's basketball team upset New Zealand with an impressive 82-75 win at Delnice, Croatia, Tuesday evening. Andy Betts lead the scoring for team GB shooting 15 points, with the team's performance winning praise from head coach Chris Finch; "It was a much improved performance - we got significant contributions from everybody at key moments. We looked more like a team tonight," he said. Meanwhile the women's team head to Norway for a pair of exhibition matches over the weekend. JUDO… British Judo has today confirmed that 30 countries will compete in the 2007 Fighting Films GB World Cup for Men, which is supported by UK Sport's World Class Events Programme. The event will be staged at the Birmingham National Indoor Arena on 22-23 September, with around 200 athletes expected to compete. As a qualification event for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, it will no doubt be a spectacular battle for valuable qualification points amongst the World's best. More @ www.britishjudo.org.uk
MODERN PENTATHLON… Two British women Heather Fell and Katy Livingston - have already achieved the qualifying standard for the Beijing 2008 Olympics, with qualification for the Games only available for up to two men and two women from each country. A male British modern pentathlete has not competed at the Olympics since Richard Phelps in 1996. There are further opportunities to achieve the qualifying standard after the current World Championships in Berlin, including the 2007 World Cup Final in Beijing in September and the 2008 World Championships, which get underway at the end of May in Budapest. MOUNTAIN BIKING… British Cycling has announced its final line-up for the 2007 Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships, to be held in Fort William, Scotland on 3-9 September - the first ever world championship event to be staged in the UK. More @ www.britishcycling.org.uk
NETBALL… Singapore hosts the 2007 Five Nations Cup this September which will feature teams from Canada, Northern Ireland, Sri Lanka and Trinidad & Tobago. The tournament has increased from four to five nations this year, giving the Singapore team a bigger training platform to prepare for the World Netball Championships later in November. ORIENTEERING… The GB Orienteering team travels to the World Championships in Kiev this week, where GB athlete and former World Sprint Champion Jamie Stevenson will be hoping to medal in again. The team is also looking for strong performances from Jon Duncan, Graham Gristwood and Helen Bridle. ROWING… GB Rowing has finalised its line-up to compete at the 2007 World Championships in Munich from 26 August-2 September. The men's eight will be stroked by Alastair Heathcote who, like his crew-mate Robin Bourne-Taylor, is "on loan" to GB from the British Army. Hugo Lee is injured and has been replaced by Tom Solesbury, and the hugely-experienced former world medalists Josh West and Tom Stallard are also included. The line-up also includes 2006 world junior champion Tom Lucy, aged 19, who is one of the youngest rowers ever to be selected for a senior world championships squad in an Olympic class boat. Alice Freeman, meanwhile, has moved into the women's eight. During the past few weeks of training camps she has found favour above Georgina Menheneott who will now race in the women's four with Vicky Myers, Rebecca Rowe and Vicki Etiebet. SAILING… The infamous Qingdao light winds prevailed on the opening day of sailing's Olympic Test Event, with only the 49er and 470 women's classes seeing any action at the 2007 Qingdao International Regatta on Wednesday. Newly crowned World Champions and world number ones Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes did get racing in the 49er class, posting a sixth from their only race after recovering from 14th at the second mark. "It was a long day in some tricky conditions," said Morrison. "But all things considered we're pretty happy with our sixth from today." SHOOTING… A 27 strong British Rifle Team will compete at the Palma Trophy at Connaught Ranges in Ottawa, Canada. Led by leading stamp expert Martin Townsend, the team contains 14 new world championship caps and will face world-class opposition from Canada, USA, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. SHOW JUMPING… Great Britain's showjumping team has made a solid start at the 2008 European Championships in Germany, when they finished the opening speed leg in fourth place. UNIVERSITY SPORT… Great Britain have won nine medals so far at the World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand, with two days of the competition still remaining. Simeon Williamson won gold in the 100m, but only after having to run the race twice. The Middlesex University student crossed the line first in 10.28 seconds in the original sprint, only to be told that a technical fault with the gun meant it failed to signal a false start, and the race would have to go again 24 hours later. In the re-run, Williamson was not to be denied the title and he ran even faster, coming first in 10.22 seconds. Elsewhere there have been three silvers and five bronze medals won. Kadi-Ann Thomas of Brunel came second in the women's 200m, whilst shooter Rachel Parish (Southampton) and swimmer Andrew Hunter (University of Stirling) did the same in the women's double trap and men' 200m freestyle. Swimmers Darren Mew and Matt Clay, who both study at the University of Bath, both won bronze, as did runner Charlotte Best (Loughborough) in the women's 800m, fencer Lawrence Halsted (Sussex University) in the men's foil and the women's 4x400m track relay team.
