ARCHERY… Simon Terry reached the last eight of the Olympic test event in Beijing, and in doing so was Britain's highest finisher. Terry eventually finished eighth overall, whilst Naomi Folkard finished 12th and Charlotte Burgess 21st in the women's event. CYCLING… Britain's David Millar finished second overall at the Eneco Tour in the Netherlands behind Jose Ivan Gutierrez. The Spaniard finished 11 seconds ahead of Millar with Sweden's Gustav Erik Larsson third and overnight leader Thomas Dekker dropping down to end up fifth overall. Elsewhere, Shanaze Reade won gold at the BMX Supercross World Cup in Beijing – which also doubled up as an Olympic test event. More@ British Cycling
DIVING… The FINA Diving World Series commences on Saturday with a young British contingent up against some of the world's top ranked divers. Sheffield's Ponds Forge International Sports Centre hosts the prestigious event as the sport gathers momentum towards next year's Beijing Olympics. The event is part funded by UK Sport's National Lottery backed World Class Events Programme, and will attract a world class field of athletes that includes two Olympic Champions, four additional Olympic medallists, 12 World Champions and 24 World Championship medallists. British Swimming Events Manager Charlotte O'Neill believes that hosting the event will have a wide range of benefits across numerous areas of the organization, "The FINA Diving World Series is an integral part of British Swimming's World Class Events Strategy and in addition to the obvious home soil advantage for our divers, there are also a number of wider legacy benefits from hosting the event," she said. EVENTING… Britain's Jump Young Rider Team of Charlotte Agnew, Dani Cuomo, Emily Galbraith and Georgie Spence retained their European title in Scotland at the weekend. They finished on 167.8 points, ahead of Switzerland in second place and Germany in third. Elsewhere, Nicola Wilson claimed individual silver, whilst Galbraith won bronze. More@ British Eventing
INTERNATIONAL… Ann Grant, Vice Chairman, of Standard Chartered Capital Markets Limited, and the former British High Commissioner to South Africa will be joining a panel session on 'Winning together: business and sport for development in partnership' which will focus on the role of the corporate sector in sport for development, as part of the Next Step conference this September in Windhoek, Namibia. The conference, led by UK Sport's International Development Programme, will bring together members of the international sport and development community to focus on issues of youth development and empowerment through sport. Former leading athletes Edwin Moses, Frankie Fredericks and Dame Kelly Holmes, will all be in attendance to speak on the use of sport as a tool for social change and inspiration for young people. JUDO… British Judo has announced 23 of its team for the 2007 Fighting Films GB World Cup for Men on the 22nd & 23rd September – an event being supported via UK Sport's World Class Events Programme. The British team includes World Champion Craig Fallon, as well as fellow previous World Cup gold medallists, Peter Cousins and Euan Burton. They are joined by fellow World Championships squad members James Millar, Jean-Rene Badrick, Matthew Purssey and Winston Gordon. "To have an Olympic qualification event on home soil is of advantage to the British team and our Beijing Olympic hopefuls have the ability to win both medals and achieve vital qualification points. It is also an opportunity for our Development players to compete. I am sure they will rise to the occasion and produce some fantastic performances," said Performance Director, Colin McIver. NETBALL… Jess Garland, who was named on UK Sport's Elite Coach programme last year, has been appointed assistant coach of TeamBath. Jan Crabtree will continue as head coach with Garland, who used to be a TeamBath player and who is rated as one of the country's most talented young netball coaches, leaving Celtic Dragons to take up her post alongside her. Garland has already coached England teams at under-17 and under-19 levels and is a member of England's under-21 coaching team. "I really enjoyed my time with Celtic Dragons last season. It was my first year of full-time coaching and a really good experience for me, but I'll be facing a different challenge here," said Garland. More@ TeamBath
ORIENTEERING… The 24th World Championships finished on Sunday with three British men finishing in top 20 of the sprint distance. Graham Gristwood came 12th, Jon Duncan 16th and Jamie Stevenson 18th. World Champion Jamie Stevenson's 9th place in the long distance was the highlight as it was the second best performance by a British male runner in this discipline (bettered only by his own 8th in Sweden 2004). ROWING… Great Britain secured five more Olympic qualifying spots by reaching World Championships finals in Munich. The men's coxless four, pair and double, plus the women's double and sculler Alan Campbell all went through to their respective medal races. The four won a tight race with France and Italy whilst Campbell defeated Olympic champion Olaf Tufte to progress to Saturday's final. Men's pair Colin Smith and Matt Langridge finished behind New Zealand in their semi-final, and double-scullers Matt Wells and Stephen Rowbotham came in behind Slovenia. Their female counterparts Anna Bebington and Elise Laverick won their semi-final in going through, whilst the men's and women's eights and the men's lightweight quadruple scull also made it through to finals. SWIMMING… Liam Tancock won 200m Individual Medley gold in a new British Record of 1:59.19, and also claimed the Most Valuable Performance award at the Japan International Open to round off an excellent four days for the British team. "I'm really pleased with the athletes' performances and the effort they have put in," he said. "This meet has been a great learning experience and an opportunity for the younger athletes to see Osaka and follow that up with a good meet," said Performance Director, Bill Sweetenham. UNIVERSITY SPORT… Great Britain finished with a total of ten medals at the 2007 World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand. Golfer Charles Ford of Tennessee University completed the haul of one gold, four silver and five bronze, when he finished second in the individual competition. Team GBR recorded more personal bests than ever before, and the podium places were won across five sports – the first time for at least five Games. The standard at the event was universally recognised as little short of outstanding and Chef de Mission, Iain Moir, was very pleased with the overall performance of the British squad given the competition they faced. "The British team can be proud of their performances," he said. "We brought a relatively young and inexperienced team to Bangkok, and we have had many excellent personal performances which haven't resulted in a medal because of the incredibly high standard of the event."
