ARCHERY… Simon Terry and Larry Godfrey secured top six qualifying places for the head-to-head rounds at the World Target Championships in Leipzig, helping secure second place for Britain in the men's recurve team rankings in the process. Terry finished fourth overall after the qualification rounds and was the top European, whilst Godfrey was sixth and out of 173 starters. In the women's recurve, Naomi Folkard led British qualification for the head-to-heads by qualifying in eighth place, and then combined with Alison Williamson and Charlotte Burgess to qualify in fourth place in the team event. In the men's compound, James Forbes, Liam Grimwood and Chris White qualified in ninth out of 40 in the team tournament. Meanwhile, Britain will face China and India in the first archery tournament at Lords – the venue for the sport during the 2012 Games – early next month. More@ The Grand National Archery Society
ATHLETICS… Britain's David Weir and Shelley Woods both clinched their places in the 1500m races at the World Championships in Japan. The wheelchair racers qualified from the official trials at a meet in Canada at the weekend. Meanwhile, long jumper Chris Tomlinson broke his own British record in Germany. The 25-year-old recorded a distance of 8.29m to beat his previous mark of 8.27m set five years ago. More@ UK Athletics
DISABILITY SPORT… Britain won two gold and three silver medals at the recent Polish Open Table Tennis Championships. Neil Robinson was victorious over France's Yann Guilheim in the class 3 event to take the first gold before Will Bayley and David Wetherill followed this up with victory in the class 6/7 combined team event – beating European Champions Denmark to take the title. Robinson added to his personal haul by winning silver in the class 3 team event with James Rawson, as did Bayley after claiming silver in the class 6 singles, whilst there was also a podium spot for Sara Head and Jane Campbell. EQUESTRIAN… International para dressage riders have been busy preparing for next weeks World Championships at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire. The competition offers British riders their last major opportunity to perform on the world stage prior to Beijing 2008 and is supported via UK Sport's World Class Events Programme. GYMNASTICS… Beth Tweddle won her seventh title at the British Championships at the weekend – leaving her just one short of joining Pat Hirst as the all-time leading title winner. The World Champion's winning score of 59.750 placed her first, ahead of City of Liverpool team-mates, Hannah Clowes and Aisling Williams. ROWING… Britain's rowers will contest the final World Cup of the season this weekend, in Lucerne, Switzerland. The event, which starts tomorrow, will feature 876 competitors from 41 countries. Tom James comes in for the injured Alex Partridge in the men's four, whilst the women's quad welcome back Debbie Flood following illness. The women's double scull pairing of Elise Laverick and Anna Bebington will race for the first time this season, with their male counterparts, Stephen Rowbotham and Matt Wells looking for a third World Cup podium spot out of three. SWIMMING… Britain's Keri-Anne Payne and Cassie Patten dominated the podium at the LEN Open Water 10 km Swimming Cup in Italy at the weekend, winning gold and silver at Milan's rowing lake. There was just half a second separating the duo as they touched - Payne finishing the 10k course in 2.05:03.3 with Patten on her shoulder at 2.05:03.9. Aurelie Muller of France took the bronze. UNIVERSITY SPORT… The British University Sports Association (BUSA) has announced that a new sporting festival will be launched next year. The British University Championships will feature 22 sports across a combination of team finals and individual Championships, with the aim of raising the level and profile of student sport from participation through to elite competition. The inaugural event takes place in Sheffield from 13-16 March 2008. Meanwhile, a new single body will be established to co-ordinate the provision of sport within the UK university sector. BUSA and the UCS – the body that represents professional staff in the sector – have agreed to come together over the coming year to form the new organization, both ceasing to exist from June 2008. WHEELCHAIR TENNIS… Britain's Jayant Mistry has announced his retirement from international competition, due to a persistant shoulder injury. The British number one for more than 15 years won 67 international career titles – 20 singles and 47 doubles – on the NEC Tour and represented Britain at 20 World Team Cups and four Paralympic Games. "Jayant has performed at the highest levels and will be sorely missed from British wheelchair tennis," said Director of the British Tennis Foundation, Sue Wolstenholme. "I thank him on behalf of everyone working in the game for his outstanding contribution, for his commitment and dedication, and for leading the way to success for other British players."
