ARCHERY… A strong squad of ten British archers will compete in this weekend's FITA World Target Championships in Leipzig, Germany. The event is one of two major international archery events in the next four weeks – with the fourth leg of this year's Meteksan FITA World Cup Series in Dover, taking place at the end of the month. Meanwhile, British juniors returned home with three silver medals from the European Championships in Portugal, with Tom Barber (recurve cadet), Matthew Arnold (junior compound), and the trio of Matt Rudge, Jake Bunce and Matt Gardner in the junior compound team event, all securing second places on the podium. ATHLETICS… Britain's David Weir set two World records at the Meet in the Heat event in the USA. The wheelchair racer recorded 2:55.72 in the T54 1500m heats, beating the previous world best of 2:56.61, before setting another in the 5000m with 9:54.82 – the first athlete to break the ten minute barrier. Shelley Woods finished third in the women's 5000m, setting a new British and European record in the process. Elsewhere, Jo Pavey qualified for the World Championships to beat the 10000m qualifying time at the BMC Nike Grand Prix, crossing the line in a lifetime best of 31 minutes 26.94 minutes. BOXING… Fred Evans (57kg - Wales) and Robert Wright (48kg - Scotland), won a gold and silver medal respectively at last week's European Cadet Championships in Hungary. Both boxers are part of the GB Boxing 2012 Development squad and have been attending centralised training camps in Sheffield since the start of the year. GB Development Coach Jim Davison was delighted with their performances: "These are fantastic results for the lads who have undeniably profited from regular training sessions rubbing shoulders with the best young boxers in the Home Nations," he said.
CANOEING… Tim Brabants picked up two medals at the European Flatwater Championships in Spain at the weekend, claiming the mantle of European Champion in the process. The World silver medallist took gold in the men's K1 500m after he had claimed a silver in the 1000m the previous day. Elsewhere, both Fiona Pennie and David Florence won bronze medals at the Slalom World Cup. Pennie came third in the women's K1 whilst Florence made the podium in the men's C1. More@ GB Canoeing
HOCKEY… Despite a spirited comeback, England lost 4-3 to India in their bronze medal play-off at the men's Champions Challenge in Belgium. England were 4-0 down after only 22 minutes but goals from Rob Moore, James Tindall and Simon Mantell ensured India faced a very tense end to the game. Elsewhere, Scotland's men compete in the Four Nation's Invitational Tournament in Russia this weekend. INTERNATIONAL… Following successful lobbying by UK Sport and partner organisations, the visa fee for all visa nationals travelling to the UK under the permit-free concession for sports persons has now been reduced from £200 to £99 with the change coming into effect on 15 June 2007. The revised fee structure has been welcomed by UK Sport as a significant step towards maintaining the UK's profile as an internationally competitive destination for major sporting events. ORIENTEERING… Britain's have announed their final squad's for this year's World Championships. The men's team consists of former World Champion Jamie Stevenson, bronze medallist Jon Duncan, rising star Graham Gristwood, Matt Crane and debutant Scott Fraser. The women's team is led by Helen Bridle, who finished sixth in last year's World Championships, alongside Helen Winskill and Jenny Johnson, rising star Pippa Whitehouse and debutant Helen Palmer. ROWING… Alex Partridge will miss the third and final World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland, next weekend with a knee injury. After their gold medal in the men's eight at the previous World Cup, the men's four of Partridge, Steve Williams, Peter Reed and Andy Hodge were due to compete in their 'main event', but will now race with Tom James coming in for the injured rower. SAILING… The ISAF World Championships got underway in Portugal this week, with a number of British sailors getting off to good starts. In the Laser class, three-time European Champion Paul Goodison currently lies third overall, whilst Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson are fourth in the Star. Leigh McMillan and Will Howden recorded a fourth and second place from their two races yesterday, with the Finn and Yngling classes commencing today. Racing continues through until 13 July. TRIATHLON... Britain finished top of the medal table at the European Championships in Denmark, after victories for juniors Alistair Brownlee and Hollie Avil. Brownlee took control during the run to finish ahead of Aurelian Raphael of France and Portugal's Joao Silva, whilst Avil beat Germany's Rebecca Robish to her title. Andrea Whitcombe was the highest senior finisher in fourth, with Michelle Dillon in sixth. In the senior men's event, Will Clarke came 12th, Olly Freeman 14th and Tim Don 18th following a puncture during the cycle stage. VOLLEYBALL… Dr Lorne Sawula took his British women's side to Switzerland for three matches last weekend. Although the Swiss were victorious in all three, there were promising signs as the team recovered from an opening 3-0 loss to push their opponents all the way in the second, just being edged out 3-2. The final game ended in a 3-1 win for the hosts. Meanwhile, as of October, Britain's men will compete in the Dutch Pro A league as part of Club Martinus under their head coach Harry Brokking. Elsewhere, Zara Dampney and Shauna Mullin along with male pairs Jody Gooding & Steve Grotowski, Luke Sheaf & Greg Weaver and Morph Bowes & Robin Miedzybrodski are all out at the Swiss Beach Masters, whilst top pairing Lucy Boulton and Denise Johns gained a wild card entry into the main draw in Montreal. WATER POLO… The LEN European Nations Trophy – which is being supported with up to £90,000 via UK Sport's National Lottery funded World Class Events Programme – gets underway at the Manchester Aquatics Centre this Sunday. Britain will face European rivals France, Poland, Ukraine, Israel and Ireland in the group stages, where a top two finish would automatically qualify them for the quarter-finals. WHEELCHAIR TENNIS… The men's international doubles tournament returns to Wimbledon this weekend with Shingo Kunieda and Satoshi Saida of Japan looking to defend their title. Last year's runners-up, Britain's Jayant Mistry and Michael Jeremiaz of France, will also compete, as will second seeds Robin Ammerlaan and Ronald Vink of Holland. More@ The British Tennis Foundation
WINTER OLYMPICS… The IOC announced this week that Sochi, in Russia, has been chosen to host the 2014 Games. The resort claimed 51 votes, four more than second placed Pyeongchang in South Korea. WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES… Commonwealth Games gold medallist Matthew Clay, and senior team-mates Darren Mew and Terri Dunning, are amongst those included in Britain's swimming squad for the Games that take place in Bangkok from 8-18 August.
