IN BRIEF

ARCHERY…  Britain's Nichola Simpson set a new world record at an indoor shoot in Bedford. The compound archer broke the existing world mark for a FITA 25 with a score of 574, and then set a new British combined record for the 25m and 18m distances with a score of 1150. In addition, Simpson also celebrated winning BBC Oxfordshire's sportswoman of the year. "Winning the BBC award was a big honour for me, and it clearly inspired me at the Bedford indoor shoot," said Simpson. "Setting those records was the icing on the cake." ATHLETICS… Welsh Athletics celebrated its centenary this week, inducting five members into its new hall of fame. Colin Jackson, Dame Tanni Grey Thompson, Lynn Davis, Steve Jones and John Disley were the inaugural inductees. Elsewhere, Ken Harris, Wales' oldest living Champion at 97 years old, was awarded a lifetime achievement award.

FOOTBALL… England and Wales are one win away from qualifying for next year's Paralympic Games at the Cerebral Palsy World Cup. Despite suffering a 4-0 loss to the Ukraine in the quarter-finals, a top seven finish would guarantee a place in Beijing. They face the Netherlands later today and victory would secure qualification. If they do clinch a spot in China, they will be known as Great Britain.

NETBALL… England became the first team to seal a place in the semi-finals of the World Championships when they overpowered Malawi 81-37 in Auckland today. After a slow start, England gradually found their stride, going on to lead at the end of each quarter 21-8, 46-14 and 66-26. "It's nice to get through that one," said England coach Marg Caldow. "They are always hard matches when you hit this stage and you're never quite sure what's going to happen and how you're going to perform, so we're through and that's the main thing." Elsewhere Scotland beat Malaysia 68-40 in the 9-16th place play-offs, whilst Wales lost 36-68 to Fiji at the same stage. More@ England Netball; Netball Scotland; Welsh Netball

ROWING… The British Indoor Championships take place this weekend with 11 of Britain's men's squad taking part. The Championships, which were established in 1991, attracts rowers from all over the country and of all ages. Andy Hodge and Peter Reed, World Champions in the men's four in 2005 and 2006, are amongst the 136 entrants in the men's open heavyweight category. Also competing are Tom Lucy and Josh West from this year's medal winning men's eight and men's pair world bronze medallists Matt Langridge and Marcus Bateman. For the second year running, there will be adaptive events taking place but the British women's squad will not be attending. More@ GB Rowing

SAILING… Newly crowned ISAF World 29er silver medallists, Sophie Weguelin and Sophie Ainsworth, head the Team GBR recruits stepping up from the youth set-up into the Olympic Classes arena as they join the women's 470 ranks. In total, 13 of Great Britain's Olympic sailing hopefuls of the future have been handed a major boost in realising their dreams after being invited to join the RYA's Olympic Development programme. Amongst the other sailors to be selected is 15-year-old Mike King, who becomes the youngest ever person to be invited on to the World Class Programme, qualifying for the Paralympic 2.4 mR class. "For members of the current youth and junior squads to see the likes of Sophie and Sophie and Mike King having their talents recognised at this stage by being invited to join the Olympic Programme, can only serve to remind them what is possible," said Barrie Edgington, RYA Olympic Development Squad Manager. VOLLEYBALL… Britain's men are still awaiting their first win in the Dutch league after losing to Landstede and DOC Stap Orion at the weekend. Playing as Club Martinus, they pushed Landstede all the way in the first match, taking the first game and going on to lead 2-1 before their opponents levelled and proved too strong in the decider, winning 3-2. DOC Stap Orion proved a tougher proposition however, running out 3-0 winners. This weekend sees them face another double-header as they take on Lycurgus away and Omniworld at home.
