With competition for medals in Beijing this summer set to be the most intense in living memory, UK Sport and the British Olympic Association this week revealed some of the secrets behind their preparations for the world's biggest sporting event.
UK Sport and the English Institute of Sport, together with the major football authorities, this week offered over 1,000 released academy footballers the chance to take up the challenge and switch their talents to targeted Olympic sports.
Shanaze Reade successfully defended her World BMX Champion title in Tiayuan, China, over the weekend. Back in March, UK Sport heard from the 19-year-old about the importance of the funding she receives in allowing her to dedicate time to her sport, as well as the support team behind her success.
Sheffield will be the centre of the universe for British wrestling fans this weekend as the inaugural GB Cup for the world's oldest sport takes place, supported via UK Sport's Lottery funded World Class Events Programme.
The best elite young rugby players in the world will be on show throughout Wales from this Friday (June 6–22), as the top 16 international U20 sides compete for glory at the IRB Junior World Championship, an event also supported by UK Sport's World Class Events Programme.
