Attracting major sporting events to the UK makes strong economic sense and can act as a catalyst for change within a sport, according to a major new report produced this week by UK Sport.

Searching for precocious talent ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games took another step further last weekend as GB Rowing's World Class Start Talent ID Programme along with UK Sport and English Institute of Sport (EIS) tested its first wave of Sporting Giant applicants in Nottingham.

Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe has stressed the important role WADA has to play in ensuring all countries meet the requirements set out in the new World Anti-Doping Code when it comes into place next year.

Equality milestone for UK SportEQUALITY MILESTONE FOR UK SPORT
UK Sport has this week achieved the Foundation Level of the Equality Standard, with the assessment panel commending the portfolio of evidence submitted. UK Sport is also providing support for national governing bodies to help them work through the Standard.

Shanaze ReadeREADE ON TOP OF THE WORLD
Shanaze Reade added a second World Championship title to her collection, just four months after taking her first, when she struck gold at the BMX World Championships in Canada. Reade's result is particularly timely with BMX making its debut at next year's Olympic Games in Beijing.

WorldDOVER WELCOMES WORLD'S BEST ARCHERS
Dover welcomed visitors from all over the world, as top international archers arrived at the Kent coastal for the Meteksan FITA World Cup tournament. The event is being supported by UK Sport's World Class Events Programme.

UK Athletics this week named 49 athletes in its first wave of selections for the Norwich Union Great Britain & Northern Ireland team that will compete at the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan, next month.


Heather StanningWOMEN'S PAIR GOLD AT UNDER-23 CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Great Britain squad equalled their best total at the World Under-23 Championships in Strathclyde Country Park in Motherwell, winning seven medals, including gold for Olivia Whitlam and Heather Stanning who led the women's pairs final from start to finish.

BADMINTON… World champions Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms will spearhead England's bid for glory when they start the defence of their mixed doubles titles in Malaysia on 13 August. They are joined by Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg who they beat in last year's final in Madrid. Meanwhile China's Lu Jian has been appointed Assistant National Coach for the English team. BASKETBALL… Chris Finch's British squad has just completed a gruelling week's training in Florida as preparations continue for next month's Eurobasket clashes. BOXING… A strong British team picked up a record 10 medals at the recent Commonwealth Federations Championship in Liverpool. Among these were gold medals for Stephen Smith, Billy-Joe Saunders, Danny Price and David Price. More @ www.abae.co.uk

CURLING… British Curling has launched its Performance Plan for the Winter Olympics in 2010. The Plan outlines performance targets, the staffing structure and selection process, as well as the key elements of the programme's content and delivery.

DISABILITY CYCLING… Darren Kenny has won the CP3 category of the 22km time trial at the Para-Cycling Europa Cup in Germany. The Paralympic champion finished almost six minutes ahead of his nearest rival and is looking in good shape ahead of the forthcoming World Championships in France. More @ www.britishcycling.org.uk

DISABILITY SHOOTING… Britain won four medals at the recent Open European Shooting Championships in Germany, with Paralympian Di Coates leading the way with silver in the women's 10m R2 rifle SH1. More @ www.paralympics.org.uk

EQUESTRIAN… John and Michael Whitaker, and their niece Ellen, have all been named in the British squad for the European Showjumping Championships which get underway in Germany on 14 August. Britain must finish in the top three at the Championships in order to qualify for next year's Olympic Games. More @ www.bsja.co.uk

EUROPEAN YOUTH OLYMPIC FESTIVAL… A 64 strong team represented Team GB in seven sports in Belgrade and despite oppressively hot conditions, returned with 23 medals – nine of them gold. The team finished second in the medal table with athletics, cycling, swimming and table tennis producing golden performances. The performances pleased the team's Chef de Mission, Mark England, "Although Team GB won medals across five sports, the most pleasing aspect of the Festival was the number of personal bests recorded by many athletes. The EYOF gave all 64 of our young athletes a chance to compete under the Olympic rings and to experience the unique environment that comes with living in an Olympic Village, with other sports and countries." FENCING… Olympian Richard Kruse was among the winners at the recent National Championships in Sheffield. Kruse took gold in the men's foil, with Anna Bentley, Jon Willis, Mary Cohen, Chris Buxton and Joanne Hutchinson the other winners.

HOCKEY… Scotland's men beat Italy 9-1 in their final warm-up match ahead of the EuroHockey Nations tournament in Portugal. Seven goals came in the last 20 minutes, with Fergus Dunn netting a hat-trick. More @ www.scottish-hockey.org.uk

RUGBY UNION… The Rugby Football Union for Women will benefit from a Sport England grant of £1.4 million over three years to be spent on supporting club coach development. Ten Club and Coach Officers will be appointed to focus on coaching players of all standards and mentoring coaches within clubs, counties and the regional set-up. Meanwhile, the Rugby Football Union has been delivering its anti-doping message to the coaches of the country's leading teenage rugby talent. TABLE TENNIS… Gavin Evans won gold in the boys singles at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Belgrade, beating Belgium's Jean Laurie in the final. "He's worked very hard and I am really pleased for him," said Team Manager Steen Hansen. 

TRIATHLON… Tim Don and Andrea Whitcombe were the highest placed British competitors at last weekend's Salford BG Triathlon World Cup. The men's race was won by Spain's Javier Gomez, his 11th World Cup podium finish in a row. Don was fourth, with Will Clarke and Stuart Hayes finished eighth and ninth respectively. In the women's race Andrea Whitcombe claimed her best ever finish in a World Cup when she also came home fourth, just over a minute behind the winner – Vanessa Fernandes of Portugal. SWIMMING… Fran Halsall was awarded Swimmer of the Championships after winning the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly at the National Championships in Sheffield. Other notable performances included Mark Foster winning the 50m butterfly and freestyle, and David Carry winning gold in the 200m and 400m freestyle. More @ www.britishswimming.org

VOLLEYBALL… The British men's team flew out to Tunisia this week having picked up three wins in four matches in Eqypt. They will play a series of matches in Tunisia before returning to the UK on 8 August. In Beach Volleyball, Lucy Boulton and Denise Johns were knocked out of the Klangenfurt Grand Slam in Austria and will return to make a stop on the domestic 'Volleyball England Beach Tour' which hits Regents Park this weekend. WHEELCHAIR TENNIS… Britain's Lucy Shuker has broken into the top ten of the world rankings for the first time. The new world number nine lost out to world number one and eventual champion Esther Vergeer of the Netherlands at last week's British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Nottingham.
