With just over a week to go before the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games are officially underway, UK Sport Chief Executive, John Steele, explains just what is needed to achieve success at the highest level - and reach the Olympic podium.
The importance of athletes thinking carefully about which supplements they use has been highlighted by research conducted by HFL Sport Science and Lucozade Sport which found that 10.5% of 152 supplements it tested contained prohibited substances not listed on the label.
In a week where Team GB were officially entered for the Beijing Games, the search for hidden talent took another step forward as UK Sport and the English Institute of Sport (EIS) descended on Bath and Manchester for the Girls4Gold and Pitch2Podium Olympic Talent Assessment Events.
The UK has won the rights to host two major international fencing championships before 2012, with the announcement that Belfast will stage the 2009 Junior and Cadet World Championships and Sheffield the 2011 European Championships.
Earlier this month, UK Sport welcomed a delegation of women's sports leaders from Morocco, who spent a week in the UK as part of the Women@Work partnership project with the British Council.
The UK has been chosen to host another World Championships, with the announcement that Sheffield will host the 2010 Goalball World Championships. The event is being supported with up to £234,000 from UK Sport's Lottery funded World Class Events Programme.
