Downhill Success for BritainDOWNHILL SUCCESS FOR BRITAIN
There were four medals (one gold, one silver and two bronze) from ten top ten finishes for Britain in all four Downhill Elite and Junior events this weekend, to bring to an end a great week for international Mountain Biking at Fort William, Scotland - an event supported via UK Sport's Major Events Programme.

Positive future ahead for Youth CricketersPOSITIVE FUTURE AHEAD FOR YOUTH CRICKETERS
UK Sport has helped to develop the Positive Futures Cricket Project, an initiative which will give young South Africans a new opportunity to embrace one of the regions most loved sporting pastimes. The project will be launched this weekend in the Western Cape and will use cricket as a means of building trust with young people from marginalised communities.


Louis SmithBRITISH GYMNASTICS THRILLED WITH WORLD CHAMPS
The 40th World Gymnastics Championships came to a close over the weekend in Stuttgart, Germany, with Britain celebrating one of their most successful campaigns ever, where Louis Smith won bronze.


Peter NorfolkUS OPEN WIN FOR NORFOLK
Britain's Peter Norfolk won the inaugural Quad Singles title in the US Open Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, after overcoming the world number one David Wagner of the host nation in Sunday's final at Flushing Meadows, New York.


Brook to move onBROOK TO MOVE ON
The British Triathlon Federation announced this week that Chief Executive, Norman Brook, is to leave as their Chief Executive at the end of this year as he relocates to South Africa, so that he can spend more time with his wife and family, where they are now based.


Luol DengBRITAIN CLOSER TO PROMOTION
Great Britain are on the verge of promotion into Europe's basketball elite, after a convincing victory over Switzerland in Tuesday's EuroBasket promotion play-off first leg in Sheffield. Chris Finch's team won 74-41, carrying over a 33 point lead into the second leg in Geneva on Saturday.

 
IN BRIEF

BADMINTON… Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg are through to the last eight of the mixed doubles at the Japan Open in Tokyo. The 2006 World runners-up beat Jonas Rasmussen and Lena Frier Kristiansen 21-11 21-18 to set up a quarter-final clash with the Chinese pairing of Zheng Bo and Gao Ling. Meanwhile, Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson lost out to the Korean duo, Han Sang Hoon and Lee Hyo Jung 21-16 22-20, whilst Tracey Hallam also bowed out, going down 21-11 23-21 to top seed and Olympic Champion Zhang Ning. CANOEING… Anna Hemmings won her sixth World title at the weekend, after claiming victory in the women's K1 at the World Marathon Championships in Gyor, Hungary. The 30-year-old, who was defending the crown, crossed the line in 1.55.59 to win in a very tight race. Hemmings also raced in the K2 with Louisa Sawers but the pair finished outside of the medals in fifth. Elsewhere, Jessica Walker continued her fine form by winning bronze in the junior K1 before teaming up with Amoret King to win another bronze in the junior K2. More@ GB Canoeing

CYCLING… British riders are in good positions following the first three stages of the Tour of Britain. Ben Swift has a 13-point lead over Paul Manning in the climber's competition, whilst Roger Hammond shares the lead in the points competition with Russia's Nikolai Trusov. Mark Cavendish currently lies fourth. The tour concludes on Saturday. More@ British Cycling

EQUESTRIAN… Great Britain will attempt to defend their title at the 2007 European Eventing Championships in Italy, which get underway today. They will be chasing their seventh consecutive team win at the event, with Zara Phillips, Daisy Dick, Georgie Davies, Mary King, Oliver Townend and Sharon Hunt all included. The Championships conclude on Sunday. Meanwhile, it was a good weekend for Britain at the Blenheim Horse Trials as Chris King came first and Kristina Cook finished in second. New Zealand's Andrew Nicholson was third. More@ British Eventing       

FOOTBALL… England's women were denied an opening win at the 2007 World Cup in Japan by a last ditch equaliser in their game against the host nation. Kelly Smith looked to have secured all three points for Hope Powell's side as she put England 2-1 up late in the second half, but a free-kick by Aya Miyama deep into injury time secured a point for the Japanese. England face Germany – who thrashed Argentina 11-0 – in their second group game tomorrow. More@ The Football Association

HOCKEY… Scotland's women claimed victory at the European Hockey Nations Trophy in Lithuania, gaining promotion to the Championships in two years time in the process. A 2-0 victory over Belgium in the semi-finals ensured promotion before a 3-1 win against Russia in the final saw them clinch the title. "We were nervous at the start and the Russians played well, but once we made it 3-1 we never looked back," said Coach Keith Joss. "Our success over the week is testament to the training and the support team – the girls were in good physical shape for the entire tournament." Meanwhile Scotland's men have got off to a good start in their quest for promotion. Three group games have resulted in three victories, with wins against the Ukraine (1-0), Switzerland (6-0) and Wales (3-1), and they now face Poland in tomorrow's semi-final. Wales meanwhile lost their opening game 2-0 to Switzerland before drawing 2-2 against the Ukraine prior to their match against the Scots. More@ Scottish Hockey & Welsh Hockey

INTERNATIONAL… International Development through Sport (IDS), UK Sport's charitable arm, has been confirmed as one of two official charities for the 2007 Matrix Skeleton Challenge. The event is to be held at the Lillehammer Olympic Park, Norway from 6 to 9 December, and is an annual competitive competition between corporate teams. More@ International Development Through Sport 

NEXT STEP CONFERENCE… There are just seven days to go until the opening of the 2007 Next Step Conference, in Windhoek, Namibia.  Hosted by UK Sport in partnership with the Namibian Government, the Next Step conference on international sport and development and will bring together international organisations such as the IOC, FIFA and the UN, alongside grassroots projects which are using sport to address social issues such as HIV/Aids. His Excellency Hifikepunye Pohamba, President of Namibia, will officially open the conference on September 19, with addresses from the Hon John Mutorwa, Minister for Sport in Namibia, Tessa Jowell, Minister for the Olympics, and Sue Campbell, Chair of UK Sport. More @ Next Step 2007

SWIMMING… British Swimming has today announced the appointment of Michael Scott as a High Performance Consultant. The Australian will take up his post on 1 October and was most recently the Chief Executive of the FINA World Championships in Melbourne in March. "We are delighted to have Michael on board at this time," said David Sparkes, Chief Executive of British Swimming. "He has an excellent track record in swimming and sport and whilst our search for a permanent National Performance Director continues, Michael will ensure continuity by managing the team and programme that has been put in place by Bill Sweetenham," he added. TRIATHLON… Britain's Julie Dibens continued her success in the USA this year by finishing second in the women's elite race at the Los Angeles Triathlon. The British National Champion finished behind Emma Snowshill of Australia in 2:03.33 to follow up her second place in New York and her third place finishes in Minneapolis and Chicago. WATER SKIING… Britain's Glenn Campbell and Nicole Arthur have both been crowned World Slalom Champions in what has been a brilliant couple of weeks for British Water Ski. Arthur became World Champion in Linz Austria, before Campbell took his crown following a ski-off with Drew Ross of Canada in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. There were also two bronze medals as Jodi Fisher finished third behind Campbell and Ross, whilst Jason Seels grabbed a podium place in the Jump event in Linz. The team now travel to the US Open before returning for the European Championships in Italy. More@ British Water Ski
