Yesterday saw the start of five days of world class international competition on British soil supported by UK Sport's World Class Events Programme, and the opportunity for many British athletes to strive for qualification for Beijing with the support of a home crowd behind them.
UK Sport this week announced details of its most comprehensive pre-Games drug testing and education programme. Over 1,500 tests will be carried out on British athletes competing in Beijing at this summer's Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the aim of testing every single athlete selected for Team GB at least once in the run-up to the Games.
Home advantage for British athletes will be given a major boost this year thanks to the number of world events being held in the UK. UK Sport is supporting a total of 14 international events in 2008 through its ambitious National Lottery backed World Class Events Programme, including a record six World Championships.
Britain's Tom Daley, who at 13 years of age has already qualified to compete in the Beijing Olympics, made history again at the European Championships in Eindhoven at the weekend, when he became Britain's youngest diving gold medallist.
Nick Dempsey and Paul Goodison added to Ben Ainslie's earlier triumph to make it a hat trick of gold medals for Great Britain at the Princess Sofia Trophy in Palma, Majorca.
